The Day of Freedom
Independence
Day is considered the most significant event in our country since it is the
time were the Philippines achieved national sovereignty on July 12, 1946. Freedom
is one aspect to keep peace in our country. Gladly over the years, it is
celebrated to pay tribute and to respect the cause of the event.
On August 4, 1964, former President Diosdado Macapagal signed Republic Act No. 4166, which established the annual June 12 commemoration of the Philippine Independence Day. This Act established the holiday, which is based on General Emilio Aguinaldo's Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898, and Filipino revolutionary troops fighting against Spanish domination. In 1898, the Philippines' flag was hoisted and the national song was played for the first time.
Before the
pandemic, government offices were closed. In every school, there are no
classes. Except for retail malls, many businesses are closed. Buses, passenger
jeeps, and tricycles continue to run, however, their itineraries may be
restricted owing to the closure of streets utilized for parades. The flag is
seen in various places across towns and cities in the Philippines during the
country’s Independence Day. Many cars
also sport miniature flags on this day. National parades attract a large number
of people, including government officials, employees, and students. The major
attraction, though, is the police and military parade in Manila led by the
country's current president, which is followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute.
Many Filipinos spend their days in parks and shopping centers. Many Filipino
communities in other nations celebrate the nation's Independence Day as well.
Today it is celebrated in homes and some participated virtually in this event. Health protocols were also observed upon celebrating. It is important to still observe this important event in our country despite the challenges we're facing. Within this event, our country has its own image, not just a colonized country but also a free country.
